Week 1 - Charles Miin

As humans, reality is strictly tuned to the idea of "Seeing is Believing." Our reality is filtered through our personal perception and aside from the theories put forth by religious groups, there exists few connections between humanity and the larger universe. However, we are now seeing a shift in interest as groups attempt to use the investigative power of science to elucidate a possible connection. One such group queries its validation through the concept of cells possessing a "soul" through the interaction of these cells with the environment through the release and capture of photons, or units of light. These photons interact at the cellular level to form bodily consciousness which in turn collectively forms functional consciousness. As the universe is filled with light of all wavelengths from the electromagnetic spectrum and both forms of consciousness are derived from light, the authors Pereira and Reddy explain that these two are heavily interconnected. And when speaking of near-death experiences (NDEs) specifically, it is reasoned that as the cells reach a state of near-death and injury, the cells heighten their release of photons and overall interaction with the particles around them, leading to the abnormal occurrences of higher cognition and spatial awareness told in some stories such as that of Anita Moorjani. This is a fascinating concept especially for those of us like myself who study biology to consider that diseases of the body such as cancer may be mediated by a "cell-soul pathway" and be impacted by things other than drugs or medical treatments. This theorem also finds backing with a study from Cornell University that determined that one of the most recent ancestors between sharks and humans possessed antennae like organs that were electrosensitive and allowed it to hunt prey and interact with the environment. If any of this is true, there may yet exist a "Spirit Realm" of sorts where humanity is able to interact far beyond the reaches of a mortal shell whenever they approach or even enter death. If the theory of quantum entanglement is introduced, people may theoretically enter this state where they may become aware of the larger area around their body and/or they may see the premonitions of other humans, perhaps those that they care about or total strangers and it may be because of this interaction of particles. This area of science is overwhelmingly vast and difficult to understand but with the unexplained nature of certain NDEs, it may be the source of answers to questions we have been asking since the dawn of mankind.

What are the next steps to take to help broker the veracity of this topic within the scientific community? Will psychologists and sociologists be able to cooperate with biologists and physicists to pursue the research necessary to validate or disprove this path of thinking?
