Week 5 - Mary Moua
The Dangers and Risks of Electromagnetic Fields
Both
articles “Is Wifi in Schools Safe’ and ‘Wifi in Schools’ emphasize on the
dangers of Electromagnetic field and the health risks that comes along with
exposure to EMF. Because schools are using wifi as part of their curriculum to
teach students and to help students learn, it makes me question whether
students and teachers will use the wifi less often for less EMF exposure if
it’s so essential and heavily utilized in schools. As other countries like
France, Israel, and Russia are protecting their students by banning or limiting
the use of wifi in schools, schools in the United States are continually
pushing forth more use in wifi especially to reach a younger audience.
Elementary school students are now using technological devices like the iPad
and laptops to do their schoolwork so how can there be less use of wifi in
schools to decrease the exposure of EMF if schools are maximizing on the
advances of technology to teach their students? Both articles provided
solutions as to how to go about combatting this serious health concern and
issue, but will schools actually apply and follow these solutions or will they
continue to choose technology advancements over the health of their students? I
think it’s also important to consider that even if schools enact rules and
guidelines to cease the use of wifi at school so there’ll be less exposure to
EMF, students will still use wifi in other places they go to such as home or
coffee shops so even though there might be less exposure and impact to EMF,
they’ll still be exposed nonetheless. How can different institutions including
but not limited to schools combat this issue and concern of EMF and what can we
all do collectively to protect ourselves and others? I think fighting against
this issue at schools is a great first step in accomplishing this and will help
ultimately pave the way in fighting against EMF in other places and spaces.
