Often, people like me say they want to enter the health field so they can help people. This class made me think a lot about how medicine helps people. We've often discussed how modern day medicine might harm people more than it does good. It seems in this field of parascience, medicine is criticized for being too aggressive and not spiritual enough. Doctors are criticized for losing sight of what's important and treating only the body rather than taking the soul into account. For whatever reason, shaman healers and crystal healers have proof that their methods work in healing people when modern medicine fails despite a stigma for not believing it works. This doesn't make me want to change my career, but it changes my view of the healthcare system and gives me a better idea of what kind of doctor I want to be. I can't say that this class dispelled all my skepticism, but it has definitely opened my mind the the possibilities. I think most importantly, this class emphasizes how doctors need to remember that their patient is a person, and that in some cases, it's better to do nothing and rely on natural healing rather than use aggressive treatments. Rather, doctors need to remember to have an open mind to trying new forms of treatment and to always inform the patient of ALL their options. As always, change is a challenge. It will be especially difficult because we in the science fields rely so heavily on "science" and regard it as the ultimate truth. Since spiritual healing is something we can't fully explain, it is difficult to trust that it works. However, including these sorts of spiritual realm classes in the curriculum will help open more minds and eventually one day there can be a happy balance between spirituality and medicine.
