Week 7-Uyen Ngo
Perhaps the line that struck me the most in Robert Lanza's a New Theory of the Universe is "Most of these comprehensive theories are no more than stories that fail to take into account one crucial factor: we are creating them". When we are taught science in school, we are taught that theories are built off of observation as our evidence. We have been taught to accept certain theories as true without questioning the evidence behind it. I thought his view on the fact that there is no reality without perception was mind opening. I think in some ways, we are taught that the world and space and time as a whole controls us, that we are players in their game. And when I say "we", I mean life itself, whether that means humans, animals or plants or any other life sources. And while no doubt, they are powerful sources, their power arise from our perception and the way we interpret the world. As Lanza mentions, the reason that they control us is because "we have been taught that they are measurable. They exist. They’re real. And that reality has been reinforced every day of our lives". Because we are taught to think this way, we use dates and time to mark our lives, giving these concepts the power to set our lives on a schedule. But at the end of the day, these are just concepts. They are intangible and we have the power to change their meaning by changing the way we think.
In my observation, in today's society, they have even more control over us. We are so wired to think that being successful is always being busy and "never having time" to relax or perhaps just sit in our rooms and read a book for a whole day. We created a rushed society where everyone is so absorbed in their own needs and "not having enough time" to complete tasks. We have let time and space control us to a point where we no longer have time to connect to the world around us.
