For this week's reading it deals with the obstacles western
civilization has set up to prevent future generations to be more in tune with
spirituality. In all parts of this world there seems to be a divide among
people who are more in touch with secularism rather spirituality. One of the
key differences between these people is the amount of modernization or
influences of technology has on people. Residents in within the more rural
areas tend to focus more on the spiritual aspects of life to move on with their
life, while those in the more industrialized are more influenced by secular
beliefs or science to proceed with their life. Since there is more of an
emphasis of technology and its influence on this world most people tend to
believe in science to explain the world and its questions. As show in the
spiritually in the academy reclaiming from the margin article with the authors
trying to explain to his grandfather how people in France or Germany believe in
science to answer question such why it rains or how plants grow from the
ground. This also connects to the idea of denying one's culture because of the
upbringing they had, they lose touch with their spiritual ancestor. The same is
applied within the United States as spirituality is not as popular to believe,
rather the younger generations are taught about life through science and math.
But if move to certain aspects within the U.S. such as the deep south or rural
areas not influenced by the secular world, one can see this increased amount of
people relying on spirituality or religion to help guide them. I can kind of
understand in terms of the U.S. why spirituality wasn't emphasized as much, but
nowadays what exactly is the harm of allowing the future generations to be
exposed to spirituality?
