week 8-Vivianne Lee
Music often brings people together of different culture and one can listen and interpret music even if the language cannot be understood. In this week's reading, the article, "Earth song as a story work: Reclaiming Indigenous knowledge" by Bronwyn Fredricks discusses how their indigenous songs and stories inform them about themselves and about the world. Reading this article was very interesting to me since music has an huge impact in every culture, but the Indigenous people takes music to the next level. It was interesting to learn how the Indigenous people sing to show their connection to the earth, to each other and to themselves. I believe music has become more shallow and superficial in todays society so learning how music is how the Indigenous people connect with one another and the world in a deeper level is new and surprising. The article states, "For us, song is the heartbeat of the earth; it creates a rhythm for us to dance to, and celebrate. To know this song as Indigenous peoples is to know that song is a harmony with the earth. The song must be brought back into balance to create a harmonious future." To them, music is how one tells a story about either themselves or about their culture. Music is how they learn and become knowledgable about the past, present, and future.
