Andrea Gomez - Week 3

In the article, "Gifts from the Spirits," the theme of connection between those of us who are alive, and those of us who are in another realm is heavily discussed. Mediums, those who are able to act as a middle man for those who seek to communicate with those who have departed, is deviled into throughout the text. More than simple communication, however, mediums also serve as a voice for those on the other side, who can no longer speak to most of us in the living. Some are born with the intuition to sense those who are no longer living, and many will pass this skill down to those in their families.

However, as the text mentions, females are usually more inclined to be born with the gifts of intuition. This is also common in some shamanistic cultures throughout the world. Shamans are also known to have the ability to communicate with those on the other side, as well as sense spirits, and heal others. In my culture, women are more often than not the healers. They keep the knowledge and pass it down their line to all children who wish to learn, however it is male healers who are seen as the default.

In class we spoke about the tendency of females to have intuition or be involved as healers, and I think this may be because of our biological connection to live. Women Females are the ones who give birth, and just as in the creation story of the Corn Mother, it is females who gave birth to the universe.

Corn Mother, also called Corn Maiden , mythological figure believed, among indigenous agricultural tribes in North America, to be responsible for the origin of corn (maize).
