Feuy Saephan - Week 3
Types of spiritual healers vary throughout cultures, but they all focus on a similar concept. They reside here in the physical world to help people connect to the spiritual world – a bridge of some sort. It is a practice that can bring a great deal of emotional and physical toll as they continuously aid people in their needs, but they believe it is worth it.
As read in the articles, some spiritual healers are chosen and they must go through an initiation ceremony to become a medium, or a shaman, etc. For those who are chosen, many of them experience an illness or pain to force them into the practice. It is a way of telling them this is their chosen path they must follow, and if they choose to ignore it, then consequences will result.
Mediums, such as those in Fjelstad’s chapter, explains this practice as a gift from the spirits. After accepting their path, they develop a healthier life and become happier than they were before. Spirits will help guide the mediums and endow them with skills, such as teaching them how to control their anger or helping them gain better studying habits (Fjelstad pg. 121). Even though they must go through a harsh initiation process, the benefits they gain from the spirits outweigh the costs (pg. 126).
There seems to be a lot more spiritual healers in our society than I realized, and it is a practice that is slowly evolving to accommodate the modern world. More people are starting to accept their way of life through each changing generation.
