Matchima Prasansin - Week 3

Laos: Hmong shaman ritual

The topic of this week was shamanism. I found that reading the Pa Lor Story the Journey Between Two Worlds was interesting to me. I thought my culture is the only culture that is familiar with shamanism. In my culture we have both real and fake shamans so I did not believe this practice that much. After reading Pa Lor's story, it was interesting to learn another perspective about it. It was interesting to see that La Por grew up as a Christian with Mhong background. However, she eventually ended up becoming a shaman and that she started this practice at a very young age. It began when she felt ill at the age of 10 or 11. She went to see the shaman and she was told that the reason behind her sickness was the calling to become a shaman. From this I also believe that the god has chosen her to help others. In the reading, she said that this practice would not harm people but it would rather help. I like that she used the gift that she has to help cure people that cannot be cured by using scientific methods. From this reading I found that not everyone can be a shaman. I believe that god/spirit knows and will choose the right person. However, in my culture I believe that it is not good when spirits enter your body too often because it might end up replacing yours. So my question is Do you believe this can cause harm to a shaman?
