Matchima Prasansin - Week 4

How Does Mindful Meditation Affect Your Brain -
This week's readings, “We Are Not Alone” The Shamans Of The World Tell Us”,
talks about using non-scientific alternatives such as shamanism to solve problems.
The reading mentioned that our ancestors believed in the existence of spirits and so do I.
The idea revolves around animism which is the belief that everything has a spirit, that is
all people, animals, objects, and natural phenomena all of these possess a spirit that
connects them to each other. In ancient society, those people have developed
communication with the natural world and with spirits, as the reading says they also
had specialists skilled in the techniques of that communication. It is fascinating to me
that everything is actually connected and we can communicate between humans and
spirits. And shaman is the medium that helps connect the two. As the reading points
out that the shaman works to maintain or restore the harmonious balance between
humans and nature through connections with spirits. Not everyone can be a shaman,
this would require special techniques. The shaman would be able to connect with the
spirits, when the spirits appeared, they could help aid the individual on anything.
What I learn from this is that there would always be other ways to solve problems.
I can relate to this because when I was facing any difficulties I would think about spirit
guardians, I don’t always get what I want, but at least it makes me feel better and be mindful.

Question: How can a person become a shaman? Do spirits chose them?
