Bradley Kitaoka - Week 9

For week nine’s reading I read, “Earth Song as Storywork: Reclaiming Indigenous Knowledges” written by Frances Wyld and Browyn Fredericks. To quickly summarize what they said was that nature had its own sound and song and could be heard when taking a moment to relax and to live in the present. In addition, they said that if you listened the songs and lessons that were trying to teach you something. They also question on if they could combine their western methods of academia with indigenous methods. After reading this article it reminded me of the song “colors of the wind” from the movie Pocahontas where she is teaching John Smith that everything is alive and has feelings and can teach us things. I don’t think I agree with them that nature and the Earth has a song. However, I do believe that living in the moment and taking a minute to relax can put us at ease which I think is what they are saying. In that moment of serenity, we are then able to reflect and look at what is bothering us and try to find solutions to the problem which could be what they mean as teach us lessons. To conclude I believe in what they are saying but I disagree in how they are getting to their conclusion.

Question: If what they are saying that the Earth has a song is true, is the song usually a peaceful one or can it be more angry if there are disasters going on in the world?
