Linda Xiao-Week 8
After reading The American Scholar and The Significance of Consciousness Studies and Quantum Physics for Researching Spirituality. The article discussing Consciousness is the most interesting to me. I learned that when blind men touch different parts of an elephant they still cannot grasp the whole image of the elephant in their mind. However, if someone is not blind, they can obviously tell that it is an elephant. This is similar to our consciousness in that our brain contains a lot of things that currently science cannot yet explain. There are still a lot of things that are unknown. Without the overall view of our brain and our spiritual connection, we can never tell completely what our brain and our spirit are capable of. I remember a story my sister told me. She fainted in her elementary class but even when she felt she had fainted she clearly heard her friends and classmates calling out her name. She even felt it when her teacher was carrying her to the office. Yet her body was so stiff and she could not move at all. I think this is a good example of when your brain is conscious but your body is unconscious. Another example is when we sleep we often have dreams. Someone told me that your soul and your spirit will move out of your body and go to another place while you sleep and dream. This is the case that your mind and your body are different things.
Question: Do you believe that the conscious mind and body can be separated?
