Mai Xiong - Week 8
In “The significance of consciousness studies and quantum physics for researching spirituality” by Joan Walton, the author argues that we need to be more open to the phenomenon of consciousness. Many of what we see as the sciences today are influenced by Newtonian. Our experiences, findings, and knowledge that has built science to be the field are structured in a particular way. This particular way is that whatever we are trying to find must be able to go through a series of tests. In science, hypothesis and phenomenon are to be tested. Through our ways of testing and measuring certain phenomenon, we are able to understand how certain things work in the world. Spirituality is something that is often looked down upon because we may not have the equipment to measure it. This is an unpopular idea because our sciences are shaped by being about to physically see and come to a conclusion that can be explained. Walton argues that if we are to be more open in the sciences and through looking carefully at consciousness, it can help us better understand spirituality.
There was a portion of Walton’s reading which discusses spirituality and religion. I didn’t quite understand this part. Did Walton mean religion is a way for us to practice being more spiritual? Are they different if so, how and how are they related to one another?

*Wanted to share this because I saw something similar while driving down the freeway. It shows so much resistant and I was inspired by it—the beautiful things in nature.
