Week6 - Jiyan Lu

Week 6
The religious healing and care practices have existed since time immemorial. However, it is just recently that this aspect has attained importance in the scientific healthcare research. Ramakrishnan has emphasized on the use of spiritual care to provide embodied care that can easily be integrated into the evidence-based clinical practice. There are two main themes in this article: Spiritual healthcare (clinical chaplaincy and empathy) and mindful-based approaches that can improve the embodied care and can highly contribute in phenomenological studies.
During treatment, the worry, emotional disbalance, and memories, self-judgement, and other cognitive issues might veer-out patients’ self-motivation. Therefore, such spiritual practices of empathy can help in building the emotional connectivity between the healthcare provider and the patient that can help restrict such negativities. Additionally, mindfulness can make the care provider more meta-cognitive, meaning more aware of patients’ self and emotions. Clinical chaplaincy can help medical professionals to be more open-minded and respectful towards the religious association patients and deal with them accordingly. It is undoubtedly true that spiritualty and religion is the most important aspect of one’s life. Therefore, in a critical situation, one only remembers God more than anything else. Motivating them by triggering their thoughts can help patients feel less pain and remain positive.
Additionally, there have been several philosophical and psychological theories recommending the calm state of mind as productive and active. Therefore, healthcare professional adapting the mindful-based approaches in their practice can contribute significant improvement in the overall healthcare system. However, there are many benefits of the spiritual healthcare, yet it has so far not received any attribution in the evidence-based healthcare. Since the outcomes can be measured and their efficacy can be monitored, such alternatives should be incorporated to facilitate the healthcare system beyond scientific methods.
