The Devil Uses 5G Wifi (Week 5): L. Do

The Devil Uses 5G Wifi

After four years of studying Asian American Studies, I recognize that we have to go beyond analyzing contemporary, ongoing experiences of systemic, capitalistic oppression, such as 5G Wi-Fi towers creating toxic environments, without recommending practical solutions for social change. At the same time, through Johanna Hedva’s “sick woman theory,” I understand that the creation of toxic environments from 5G wifi towers can act as form of environmental, intersectional oppression, because there can be an unequal power dynamic and difference between marginalized groups who speak out against EMF waves harming children’s bodies and privileged groups who power holders believe when they speak out against the same subject as marginalized groups (Hedva, 150.) Yet, we need to reclaim our agency in capitalism by reexamining how our support of unregulated 5G wifi towers can inflict injuries on vulnerable groups, such as children, within capitalist structures by funding and buying into this problematic technology (Russell, 17; Spero, 2.)

At the same time, you should stop saying that you want to eliminate capitalism, imperialism, and other forms of oppression if you are not looking at how you use your own agency to benefit from the tantalizing illusions of capitalism in your daily life by not doing your research on how the products you buy and support can cause long term damage and short term damages. By normalizing 5G wifi towers at scholars, we risk harming students in the the long term, especially since their bodies are not developed enough to defend themselves from EMF-induced insomnia, headaches and foggy thinking (Russell, 17; Spero, 2) Additionally, the Devil tarot card in Open in Emergency box also asks us to look at our own impact and agency in social issues before we can critique and correct other people’s behaviors that sustains the use of unregulated 5G wifi towers in schools.

The crisis over wifi towers in schools is a problem that we can solve together by making new changes in our lifestyles and daily habits. Mindfulness and transferable skills can be serve the anti-5G movement. Therefore, we also need to generate a new wave of student activism based on mindfulness (such as listening carefully, meditation practices that help us thinking clearly, and valuing projects that go beyond self-serving purposes) (Ramakinshan, 1.) For instance, STEM students and liberal arts students at UC Davis can collaborate together and organize educational workshops about the health dangers of EMF waves and carcinogens on campus that can hurt our minds and bodies. Also, for a future research project, we should look at ways in which globalists, who have control of our K-12 school curriculums and college curriculums, train students, especially university students majoring in business, technology and education,  to see 5G wifi towers as a positive collective benefit and get the majority to reject that these towers could damage children’s bodies and destroy their mental health through changes in environmental structures (Hamamoto, 2015.)

Questions

I will ask the questions below to Environmental Health Consultant Lena Pu on May 4th, 2017.

How likely are legislators and representatives at the Capitol mostly likely to listen to a white male straight guy about 5G issues rather than a Asian American women advocate? Considering that institutions and systems can pathologize and devalue Asian American women’s experiences of illness as signs of weaknesses rather than signs of strength, knowledge and wisdom, what are strategies for Asian American women anti-5G advocates to be heard and have their experiences and arguments be valued and implemented in state-level action plans?
