Week 1- Marisa Gee
The readings assigned for this week
attempted to explain NDE through a series of mathematical equations (Paul,
Devnath & Islam) and through quantum physics theory (Pereira and Reddy).
Despite the use of specific case studies, these articles felt void of any
spiritual content, which may have been the point of the authors. This is a
theme I’ve noticed, where NDE and by extension the spirit realm are explained
either from just a spiritual basis or a purely science one. However, I wonder
if the two are more interconnected than what the separated literature would
suggest. What if science and spirit together
account for NDE and the experiences of the spirit realm, instead of being one
or the other?
I think
even in the medical field there is an assumption that doctors and health care
providers do not truly believe that a spirit realm exists relying solely on
science education and training. On the flipside, people who are highly
spiritual and have gone through NDE’s will often times reject any “science
based explanation” for their experiences and in favor of the idea that no
medical explanation could account for their experiences. In this light, I think
it would be beneficial and interesting to find articles or personal accounts
that attempt to explore the interconnectedness of both science and spirit.
