Week 5 - Suzanne Vue
Reading the Review on "'You are Here': Locating 'Spirituality' on the Map of Current Medical World" by Parameshwaran Ramakrishnan makes me wonder about my religion and my beliefs. I believe in Animism, and in our religion, we practice S
hamanism. We believe that there are spirits to everything and that if we upset ones' spirit, we have to do a ritual ceremony to heal ones' spirit. But I am also born in the United States of America, and I believe in the Western ways of treating oneself. Sometimes, I am caught between my religion and the Western medical system. Because it's like a placebo effect, when yo believe, it works. But when you don't believe it, it doesn't work. Ramakrishnan's review talks about the difference between a religious practice and the Western practices. And that many religious practices are still very prevalent today and still are used instead of Western treatments. Which is true, because even within my religion, we still do too.

Question: Do you think that it is a placebo effect? Or can it really work, even if you are not from that religion or believe in that type of healing? Is everything a placebo effect?
