Week 7 - Michelle Nguyen

From my understanding, the article “A New Theory of the Universe” explains how we cannot explain why the rules of life are. We know what the rules of life are (physics, chemistry, biology) based on observation and experiments, however we don’t know how they came to be or why the rules were created the way they are. This realm of science is at the frontiers. So exotic that it spills over into the spirit realm. I think identifying this field as the spirit realm gives a negative connotation for scientists and perhaps even laypeople. Hearing “the spirit realms” makes one think of religion and paranormal activity. In reality, the field of the spirit realm and this frontier of science is just so revolutionary that we don’t know enough to explain it. There’s nothing negative about it at all. This reminds me a lot of black hole theories. No one ever criticizes them about being fake and never express skepticism over it, but we really don’t understand much about them or the rest of space. We don’t know what really happens when you go through a black hole: crushed into a space smaller than you or transported to another side of space. Yet all these theories are validated by science. So why aren’t other “spiritual realm” cases regarded as such? Like near death and out of body experiences? Why is there such a difference in how people perceive unknown science? It’s ironic that one side is regarded as groundbreaking science and the other as fun religious/magic beliefs when both are just things we have no real explanation for but witness in our world. I think it’s because the religious beliefs such as shaman healing and other spiritual healing is more or less culture based and not everyone believes in it. But black holes are not culturally produced, they were produced by scientists not bound to any culture or religion. I think that since black holes and the such were produced by those not bound to any culture or religion they are more widely accepted. And such must be the trend for other topics as well.
