Week 7: Science Catches Up to the Spirit Realm -Brittany Carlson
In preparation for this week’s
discussions, we read “Tarot Cards: The Foreigner, The Migrant, The Refugee, and
The Deportee” from the Open in Emergency
box and “The American Scholar – A New Theory of the Universe” by Robert Lanza. The
Foreigner tarot card can from the Open in
Emergency box signal the opportunity to redefine yourself. This can
possibly relate to the theme of the week regarding the attempt of people to
redefine the spirit realm through science. The Migrant tarot card from the Open in Emergency box is used to
represent forward momentum. This can possibly relate to the theme of the week
because it can symbolize that scientists are showing forward momentum with
explaining the spirit realm through scientific means. The Refugee tarot card from
the Open in Emergency box can signal
a crisis requiring an intervention. This can possibly relate to the theme of
the week in the sense that forward momentum was necessary because someone
needed to intervene with the lack of scientific knowledge about the spirit
realm. The Deportee tarot card from the Open
in Emergency box is associated with second chances and rebirth. This can
possibly relate to the theme of the week in the sense that it can signal the
rebirth in our scientific knowledge about the spirit realm. In “The American
Scholar – A New Theory of the Universe,” Robert Lanza discusses the flaws in
modern science in its lack of consideration of special biocentric properties of
life that are fundamental to reality; relating the subjective experience of
consciousness to a physical process and attempting to come up with an accurate
theory regarding this relationship to explain nature an reality. This relates
to the theme of the week because it shows that people are actively trying to
scientifically explain the connection between the body and the spirit which
will eventually lead to scientific answers. This week, I particularly enjoyed
reading the tarot cards because it made me really have to think critically to
discover a connection of the different cards to the theme of the week.

Why do scientists feel the need to connect the existence of the spirit realm to
a scientific explanation?
