Week 7 - Zoua Nikki Thao
I found this week's theme, "Science Catches Up to the Spirit Realm" to be quite interesting because everything we're assigned to read is in a sense, subjective. What I mean by this is, while some may agree that science is lagging behind the spirit realm, others can see quite the opposite. Also, some people may or may not even believe in a spirit realm. This week's readings, Robert Lanza's "A New Theory of the Universe" and tarot cards, "The Migrant, The Foreigner, The Deportee and The Refugee," didn't really connect to me. I was only able to find connections between the tarot cards, which make sense because they are part of the same deck, so they play off of one another. However, Lanza's reading talks about how human's have come to understand time and space, and how that has affected the way we interpret our lived experiences. He also draws upon the fact that much of what science is theory; things that we create. This is something I think about all the time when I learn theories in my classes, because, how true can a theory be? Which brings me to ask, is Lanza's argument also not just another theory? Is what he saying, not just created and made up?
I don't see the four tarot cards tying in with this week's theme, but I do see a common theme within the tarot cards -- the concept of being a displaced traveler. What I mean by this is that each card represents how different individuals have been forced out of their homes to how they are further displaced in their representation, created by others. I'm able to make a personal connection with "The Refugee" tarot card because I consider myself to be a refugee. I agree that there's a disconnect between "resilience" and feeling like you're "responsible" for fixing the messed up situation you've been forced into. My family has had to continuously engage in this type of battle. "The Deportee" makes me think of what is currently going in Minnesota (known as the"MN8")where a good number of Cambodian refugees have been deported or detained to be deported because of America's failed system of immigration laws. Many of these people only know of America to be home, and have already established families and lives here. However, because of past mistakes, they are subject to a system that caused their displacement in the first place.
