Week 9: Future of Spirit Realm Studies -Brittany Carlson

In preparation for this week’s discussions, we read “Tarot Cards: The Fool, The Lecher, and The Adoptee” from the Open in Emergency box and “Connected: Indigenous Spirituality as Resistance in the Classroom” by Eric Ritskes. The Fool tarot card from the Open in Emergency box represents the readiness to begin a new journey and to leave behind the past in exchange for the chance of a brighter future. This can relate to the theme of the week because the introduction of Spirit Realm Studies into academics may signal a positive change for the future of the academy. The Lecher tarot card from the Open in Emergency box represents a destructive entity but one that is close to you. This can relate to the theme of the week because in trying to advance the introduction of Spirit Realm Studies into classrooms, advocates from field of study may be met with opposition from an oppressive yet well-known entity: the academy. The Adoptee tarot card from the Open in Emergency box can be used to represent a signal of war. This can relate to the theme of the week because there may be a war within the academy to further advocate for the teaching of Spirit Realm Studies in the classroom. In “Connected: Indigenous Spirituality as Resistance in the Classroom,” Eric Ritskes explains that the emergence of this Spirit Realm Studies comes from the need to address the suppression of student access to information that is important in their acquisition of a holistic education experience and identifies the misrepresentation that Western academia portrays regarding the teaching of Spirit Realm Studies. This relates to the theme of the week because it shows the possible consequences of Western control on the perception of the Spirit Realm which will impact the future of Spirit Realm Studies. I find the topic of this week particularly interesting because I hope that in the future, Spirit Realm Studies will be a more widely taught subject but at the same time, I fear that it may be misrepresented due to the controls and regulations that may end up being imposed on the topic.

Question: How do you think that Spirit Realm Studies will be taught in the future of the academy?
