Shaman Eyes in a Mental Hospital

In “What a Shaman Sees in a Mental Hospital,” Dr. Somé talks about visiting a patient, observing how people were treated once they are confined in a mental hospital. Shamans sees “healers” in patients but are too drugged out on medicine that it causes them more pain. He also says that shamans have to perform a shamanic practice, sweep, to people with schizophrenia and foreign energy have in order to have a clear energy field. However, negative energy can also enter the aura, and a shaman practice of the removal of the unwanted presence must be done.

Dr. Somé has created and performed shamanic rituals that connected with what the culture needs and knows. These rituals allow the person to realize and accept their calling. Deceased ancestors want to help heal “what they weren’t able to do while in their physical body.” If the ancestors aren’t able to heal, “it is the duty of the living to heal their ancestors,” if not, their sick energy will embody those who were responsible to help.

Shamans believe that these rituals are able to help fix relationships with ancestors, as well as cultural issues. Dr. Somé believes that if these patients weren’t drugged out with all types of medicine, it can be very beneficial to everyone.

What are the pros and cons when psychology and medicine are put together? Would it be controversial?
