WEEK 2: Stacey Kling

I didn't know much about shamans or what they do until reading about Pa Lor's experience and our guest speaker today.

I am still curious as to what the white candles and white flowers symbolize during shaman rituals.

In a different class, I read a book called "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down", which describes the experiences of Leia, a Hmong girl who was pronounced brain-dead at an early age, and her parents' experiences navigating Western medicine. Although the Western doctors diagnosed Lia with medical names, Lia's family believes that her younger sister slammed a door and scared Lia's soul away, which is why Lia was so sick. The doctors were surprised that Lia lived as long as she did, 30 years old, and Lia's parents have strong belief in their shaman beliefs. The medicine that was given to Lia made her more sick rather than making her feel better, so her parents took her off the medicine and did their shaman/Hmong rituals on her.
