Week 3: Rhegille Baltazar
Rhegille Baltazar
Week 3
4/14/19
"The birth of a healer"
"I was so shocked. That was the first time I was brought face to face with what is done here to people exhibiting the same symptoms in my village." Dr. Some in Marohn's piece exemplifies the cultural clash between Western medicine and spiritual healing. Mental health-related symptoms have been othered and seen as an illness and a disease whereas in Shamanism it is one's own call to become a healer because of the disconnect of the person between the physical world and the spiritual world. This explains the crises in an individual. This also explains why medication sometimes does not work for mentally ill patients.
This just goes to show that the mental health industrial complex has been run by capitalism through the power of the pharmaceutical industry. Rather than attempting to heal and encourage wellness, such companies focus on its profits. I argue that the decolonizing practices of healing will end up with more healthy people. Industry these days especially in Western societies is purely driven by prophet rather than the person.
