"My Mother Not My Mother"

For Week 6's readings, I was particularly enthralled by the excerpt written by our professor called "My Mother Not My Mother." The story she told was in vivid detail where she introduced/exposed her dreams and all the nitty gritty inner thoughts and angst she felt towards her mother who wasn't present in her early childhood. It connects to week 6's theme of giving life and life giving in that there is a lot of responsibility that comes with this and although a mother is the one who has the power to give life, someone else like Professor Valverde's grandparents and aunt can take over the responsibility of life-giving and would teach, feed, and care for Caroline during her infant and early childhood years. For the longest time, Professor Valverde would hate her mother for leaving her so abruptly with no explanation and just drove off in the black sedan. However, as she got older, she realized her mother didn't really understand how to take care and discipline her, but once she tried to look at the position her mother was in when she was born- only a young adult, a mistress to a rich man who took her virginity, etc; she felt less hatred/angst. At some points in Professor Valverde's early adulthood, she even tried to have the mindset of her mother. However, it did not work out because it is "impossible to dig an pry to understand another soul." I can relate to Professor Valverde in that I don't sometimes see eye to eye on certain topics/things with my mom or understand and that's okay because "the nonsense that all things make some sense."
