Week1 - Thu Cao
How hard is it for Asian to get into medical school? Why the white always earn a higher salary than the other ethnics? Because those are the secret and underground rule of discrimination. At the same GPA, a very low percentage of Asians get acceptance from medical school while the other ethnic groups reach a very high acceptance rate. If an Asian want to get in medical school, she/he needs to have an excellently higher GPA comparing with other groups in order to be considered for an application interview. Also, the white always earn a higher salary in the same position as other ethnics. Luckily, I can say America is a better place because people have a better condition with more opportunities to find for justice. Comparing with my country where equality is a lavish work for all those who are on the road of finding justice. You may be surprised, but it is the truth. In my country, the rich are always right, they are the law because people tend to protect the one who has money. For example, the rich get good taking care in the hospital because the rich have ability to corrupt by giving money in the envelope. We usually call“envelope culture”. I remember one time I have talked about “envelope culture” in the hospital with my supervisor of a charity organization. She and I have cried together. We have cried for the poor people in the hospital, the poor in an underserved place especially the poor women who are in pregnancy. Besides the hospital fee, the pregnant have to prepare extra money for corruption otherwise they will be ignored by the physician or have to wait in pain at the time of labor. We always hope we can do more for the poor at underserved communities. However, the way we are doing is to help people solve the consequence of injustice. I mean, it is better if we can fight for justice, so we have no consequence in order to solve. I want to point out one more example, in my country, people who are considered to be ugly would hardly find a job. They also experienced their terrible student life when they were at school with the jeers from friends. I wonder why? Being ugly and poor are not their faults. We are all equal in human rights. Each one has the right to be respected.
Well! the fight for social justice and equality is a long term always. However, It is said that if you want to walk in a long distance, let’s walk together. That why we usually need to find alliance for the fight because fighting alone is always hard. The crowded tend to follow the majority rather than a few individuals or minority. I agree with the point of view of the author from the reading. Actually, somewhere someone is fighting alone, they cannot find the other ones who have a common speech in order to fight together. Building a network around the world is a good idea for finding alliance.
Have you ever wonder why discrimination still exists in our modern life? Because people allow it to happen. Some are not ready to welcome troublesome things. They want a normal life without drama. In fact, many people don’t want to speak out. They are satisfied with what they are suffering then they are continuing to suffer. Some believe they can adapt to live in peace without any fighting, even the fight for justice. They find peace in suffering rather than any fight. Some have the fear that they have to fight alone with the crowded or they are afraid to encounter the objection from society. So, let’s build a network connection to find the common speech, then we can fight together. If you have a fear of crowded, let’s form crowded to fight against the crowded.
My question for this week: why people still allow for the existing of injustice?
