Week 8 - Yufei Liu
When I was reading Earth Song as Storywork: Reclaiming Indigenous Knowledges by Bronwyn Fredericks, I was touched by some of the encounters of the author. Bronwyn met a woman on the street bursting into tears because the beautiful songs of the birds. I realized how long have I payed attention to the sounds of the nature. Whether it is walking across the campus, biking to the grocery store, or even hiking through a trail, my first instinct is to plug in my earbuds and start playing my favorite playlist. I have become so addicted to the man-made electronic wavelength flowing into my ears instead of focusing on the Earth song, the most ancient, unique, and beautiful sounds of the nature. The other thing that I have noticed is sound pollution. Growing up in a big city, I was so used to the sound of construction sites, people yelling on the street, revving car engines… Since I am living in Davis, a rather rural city, I start to find the quietness of nature calming, while the noise of a busy city very distracting and unbearable. I hope that more people would be aware of sound pollution and our government can promote policies that can help with the situation.
