Linda Xiao - week 7

This week I read My Mother Not My Mother. First, I was surprised to find out that the author is our Professor Valverde. Her story is about her life in Vietnam with her grandparents when she was four years old. Her mother picked her up when she was five years old. Her relationship with her mom is just never a mother and daughter relationship. Her mom was not mature enough to give birth and raise a daughter yet her mom’s feelings towards her dad were very strong. I can feel her pain when she talks about her mom beating on her even though she really did not mean to harm her. Her mom never treats her like she is her daughter but her mom still has a lot of love for her. Her story actually reminds me a lot of my own childhood. My mom has told me that when I was around nine months old, my fraternal grandmother complained that my mom did not know how to take care of a baby so she replaced my mom as my main caretaker for one year. Because of that, until now I still have a bad sleeping habit that I got from my grandmother. My grandmother sleeps with her mouth open and I do that too.

Question: Who did you live with when you were younger than 5 years old?
