Mai XIong - Week 7

One of the readings this week was, Audrey Wu Clark et al.’s “Treated Pamphlet on Postpartum Depression” which gives an annotated version of a mental health resources on postpartum depression (PPD). Clark et al. give personal experiences and guidance for new mothers with their revisions. Countering the advice on the original pamphlet to “Call your doctor.” Other advising were to call 911 and a National Suicided Prevention Lifeline. Clark et al. note, “Most doctors are not trained to recognize or treat PPD... Police have no mental health training...” and hotlines do not have “cultural competency.” I am surprised at the annotations on a resource guide because resource guides are supposed to give people resources and help people when they are looking for support. This shows how the original resource guide is not only culturally sensitive to groups of people, but the information is so basic that even an average person cannot get help. Such as calling 911. The cops might not be able to assist individuals in this particular area.

Overall, I think this is a beneficial reading. I plan to share it with others. Since we are talking about postpartum. I want to share this photo of the herbs Hmong people use for new mothers. They are to help the mother gain more energy!
