Rethinking the Western Health Services

Upon reading the article, What a Shaman sees in a mental hospital, I was intrigued by Alex's story and how he had many mental issues and was brought to America. He spent a couple years with the shamans at the village and after he felt better he still decided to stay because he felt safer there than at America. I thought it was interesting how he had a spiritual connection with the healing process and decided to go back to the village and came back to America to study a degree. I think I see his situation as the whole journey and healing process was simply a process in him becoming a potential healer for his village. I think however in regards to western health services, it isn't very helpful since we are very into coming up with a pathogen, or a direct cure. Alex comes from a much more spiritual belief so I can understand how the two different ways of health services can clash. My question is, maybe instead of seeing healing Alex and people with mental disorders as a pure health service, maybe seeing it more spiritually and more of a journey would be more beneficial. Is this a better way of looking at it?
