Week 7
Giving Life and Life Giving

My Mother Not My Mother, by Kieu Linh Caroline Valverde, was especially hard to read today, as my thoughts of "mothers" are lifted highly by all the wonderful mothers and motherly figures in my life. It was painful to read about such a traumatic mother-daughter relationship because I have always been extremely close with my mom. Even so, it still forced me to open up my perspective on this happy day, which I so wish to do as I try to expand my level of empathy and compassion even further.
Valverde's strong ties to her grandmother remind me of my relationship with mine. It amazes me how close bonds are not bound to all families; they are not genetic traits that are viable in one family but not another. This proves that life is what you make of it. The reading truly exemplified the power of "patience is a virtue." While life can have many difficulties, there is no way avoid or to go around the moments in which we are meant to endure. Being patient comes with many benefits and can set you free.
