I chose to examine The Model Minority tarot card for this week and was pleasantly surprised. The card touches on 6 aspect of the model minority myth, which include:

1. You are more and less than you seem
2. Overachieving is your baseline
3. While so much is expected from you, so much less is thought of you
4. White folks resent the achievements of your people, even when those achievements aren't truly yours
4.5. The model minority myth was always designed to splinter alliances
5. You represent the (myth of) promise and punishment of American exceptionalism
6. You are not welcomed in America

These painful truths are exactly what keep me pushing to break the model minority myth through my journey as a public figure/community role model. I strive to not only break free from this myth, but I am also passionate about spreading the facts about it to others. As a 3rd generation Asian American, where young folks are mostly open to diversity, it infuriates me to see POC arguing against each other. Of course, there is a lot of history and knowledge that needs to be told and understood by each culture, but it frustrates me to hear other minorities pitting themselves against Asians because our reputation was set up to seem privileged and above the others. The crisis of COVID-19 has certainly revealed the existing subtle racism towards Asian Americans by the newer reactions of extreme racism.
I choose to take this card pulling as a sign to keep pushing my advocacy for Asian Americans on the fringes of society and to never forget why the model minority myth is corrupt. The question is, what other tactics can we use to break the model minority myth at a larger scale?
