Kiya Jackson- Week 10

My reflection today will be on the topic commodification of spirituality. In the article "New Age Commodification and Appropriation of Spirituality," one topic they discuss is how the open availability of spiritual traditions are challenged by commodification. They question whether spirituality is a private possession or does it belong to the public domain. In my opinion, I think it is important to be sensitive to spiritual practices and traditions, as it can be directly linked to specific communities. Moreover, I think that the exchange of spiritual practices can be quite beneficial for the spiritual growth and health for those who seek different forms of healing. Although, I do think there is a line that indicates the improper use of spirituality. For instance, capitalism and greed redirect the significance of spirituality. It directly neglects the sacredness and value that spirituality serves for communities. The important part is to the recognize your intent and possible insensitivity when practicing.
